Join the Gen. Israel Putnam Chapter, DAR at the Holten House, to hear author Robert Hubbard discuss his biography of Major General Israel Putnam.
A colorful figure of 18th-century America, Israel Putnam played key roles in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. Born and raised in Danvers, Massachusetts, Putnam barely escaped from being burned alive by Mohawk warriors in the French and Indian War, and was held by the French as a prisoner of war in Canada. He later commanded a force of 500 men that was shipwrecked off the coast of Cuba. During the Revolutionary War, it was Putnam who reportedly gave the command “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” at the Battle of Bunker Hill. One of the main commanders at that battle, he soon after was appointed a major general in the Continental Army.
Robert Ernest Hubbard’s talk will include discussion of Putnam’s Massachusetts ancestors, his youth in Danvers, his two marriages, and the last trip of his life – a ride back to his childhood home in Danvers.
