Danvers Historical Society
is seeking applicants for its 2006 Collections Internships. Based
in historic Danvers, MA, formerly Salem Village, the society is
custodian of five historic properties including the Derby Summer
House National Historic Landmark.
- Goals:
Interns will work with a nationally significant collection of
over 12,000 items, to catalog and photograph items and enter records
into PastPerfect.
- Other
Duties: They will also assist staff in the development
of educational programming, site tours, and fundraising events.
Other projects are available depending on the candidates' skills
and interests.
- Required
Skills: Previous volunteer work with historical organizations
preferred with a basic knowledge of museum practice, collections
management, art history, material culture, or equivalent.
Commitment:
A minimum of 40 hours between April and December 2006. A minimum
of three hours per day is needed. Mondays and Fridays are preferable.

Historic
Textile Internship
Up to three interns can work on this project
simultaneously.
We encourage both individual and team applications.
- Goals:
To inventory and photograph the historic textiles and accessories
collection. To ensure the database record is complete and the
associated image is a true representation of the object. To ensure
all artifacts are stored in the most suitable manner. We also
aim to clean and/or vacuum all items where necessary, note their
conservation needs and permanently attach accession numbers.
- Duties:
Examine, clean and compare current accession record with original
piece. Take clear digital pictures of objects, download pictures
into Historical Society computer database, and index. Re- packs
textiles and accessories into archival storage boxes. Help with
preparation for our upcoming exhibits.
- Required
skills: Thorough attention to detail a must. Understanding
of museum techniques for object handling also helpful. Skills
we teach include textile and 3-dimensional object vacuuming, mounting
and packing techniques along with digital photography and PastPerfect
museum software skills.
Commitment:
